Award Winning Volunteers!
We are very proud of 5 of our long-term site Volunteers who just received the Saanich 2013 Environmental Award. James Trunkey, Ray Sielecki, Mike McLean, Grant Foss and Pro Ayres have been working together for many years every Tuesday and Friday. They prune branches and spread cedar chips to keep the trails maintained, remove invasive plants so wildflowers can grow, and work in the native plant gardens around the Nature House. After a couple of hours of hard work they enjoy homemade cookies... lots of homemade cookies.
Congratulations Director Ian Bruce!
Ian Bruce is one of our Directors and sits on our Ecosystems Committee. In his capacity as the Executive Coordinator of Peninsula Streams Society, he accepted the Biodiversity and Conservation Award from the District of Saanich for restoring the Colquitz watershed. Peninsula Streams is a very close partner with Swan Lake and it is a great relationship. To read more read Ian's biography or visit the Peninsula Streams website.
Welcome. Come and explore a beautiful place.
Swan Lake Christmas Hill Nature Sanctuary is a wild oasis
in the heart of the urban landscape and includes two distinct
ecosystems: the beautiful marshland of Swan Lake and the
spectacular Garry oak meadow on Christmas Hill.
Both are home to an incredible array of native plants and wild animals.
The Sanctuary is a living classroom fostering an understanding
and appreciation of nature through direct experiences. Educational programs for all ages encourage responsibility
for the care and protection of the natural environment.
Managed by a non-profit society, this urban refuge provides
an exceptional opportunity to bring people and nature together.
We welcome you to explore and discover.
