Christmas in July!

Wednesday, July 16, 7 pm to 9 pm

Come share the magic of Christmas Hill during a fabulous guided evening hike. Enjoy the cool breezes and listen to the chorus of birds while watching the sun set from a spectacular vantage point. Sit under the boughs of Garry Oak trees and learn the legends of Christmas Hill. Suitable for families and children over 7 years. Bring a water bottle.

Free but donations are greatly appreciated. Pre-registration required.


Wild about Wetlands

Wednesday, July 23, 12 noon to 3 pm

What makes a wetland such a great place to enjoy and protect? Find out with hands-on exploration, pond dipping for live wetland creatures, crafts, songs and games.

Check out the nightlife of Swan Lake!  Sharpen your senses to look for owls, bats and other nighttime creatures.  Using a grab bag of tricks we’ll discover how these animals are adapted to their nocturnal life.  Suitable for families with children over 6 years.

$4 each for Members / $6 each Non-Members. Pre-registration required.


Mammal Madness

Wednesday, August 6, noon to 3 pm

I’m a mammal and so are you! Come and meet some of the other amazing mammals that make Swan Lake home.  Join us for hands-on explorations, games and lots of furry fun.

Animal Grossology

Wednesday, August 20, 12 noon to 3 pm

Are you oozing to learn about the disgusting science of animal grossology? Find out about slug slime, owl barf and even the scoop on poop. Check out worms, slugs, spiders & scum as you learn about the secret world of the revolting. Activities and crafts that will gross you out!

Célébrons la nature!

Sunday, September 28, 12:00 to 3:00 p.m.

A celebration of nature, in French, at Swan Lake Christmas Hill Nature Sanctuary on Sunday September 28th from 12 noon to 3 pm. Join us for an afternoon of fun featuring hands-on exploration, games, crafts and more. Find out who really lives beneath the water of Swan Lake and some of the weird and wonderful adaptations they have to live here. Admission is by donation.

We are pleased to offer this event with participation from the Government of Canada, la Société francophone de Victoria, and CILS FM, la Société radio communautaire de Victoria. Francophones and Francophiles welcome!


Une célébration de la nature, en français, à Swan Lake Christmas Hill Nature Sanctuary, le dimanche 28 septembre de midi à 15 heures. Nous accueillons francophones et francophiles pour un après-midi rempli d’activités, de jeux, et d’exploration. Spooktacular Spiders

Sunday, October 26, 12:00 to 3:00 p.m.

What carnivorous animal spins threads stronger than steel, injects venom to liquefy its prey, and ingests food with a sucking stomach? The web of intrigue will be spun and unfolded during this special event. Meet the locals, find out which of the few are dangerous and the many that aren’t, and make a spider craft. You might even shake hands with Rosebud the Tarantula!

Wild Mushroom Show

Sunday, November 2, 10 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.

A special presentation by the Southern Vancouver Island Mycological Society. Discover the wacky and wonderful world of Vancouver Island mushrooms. The huge variety found in our forests, fields and gardens will be on display. Bring your specimens for identification.

Duck Day

Sunday, November 30, Noon to 3:00 p.m.

Some dabble, some dive, but they're all ducks. We'll explore the amazing adaptations ducks have for living on the lake and discover who's who in the duck world.

Christmas Hill Holiday Hike

Sunday, December 28, 1:00 to 3:00 p.m.

Need to burn off some holiday calories? Swan Lake Naturalists will lead a two hour hike up Christmas Hill and show you the view from above. Warm refreshments will be served at the Nature House following the hike to reward your effort.
